This community based performance project funded by Armagh city and district council was in response to Armagh Public Library’s wish to be involved in the 1000 year nation wide commemoration of the death of Brian Boru last High King of Ireland who died at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014 and was buried on the Hill of Armagh.

The project enabled adult members from all parts of the community to explore the story of Brian Boru within the context of his time. Collaborative workshops with Armagh County Museum, Armagh Observatory, Armagh Public Library and No.5 Vicars Hill provided a fascinating insight to Armagh and Ireland of the 10th and 11th centuries.

The community participants came together with all the primary schools in Armagh, Lisanally Special School, the drama department of St Catherine’s College to create a wonderful piece of dramatic theatre aided by local musicians and the Arts Care choir of the Southern health care and social trust.

The spectacle played over 2 nights at the beginning of May in the wonderful surrounds of St Patrick’s Cathedral Church of Ireland which is situated on the Hill of Armagh where Brian Boru found his final resting place after a 12 day wake.
